Mara destination guide

Maasai Mara National Reserve: Kenya's Legendary Wildlife Sanctuary

Situated in southwestern Kenya along the border with Tanzania, Maasai Mara National Reserve is one of the most famous safari destinations in the world. Known for breathtaking landscapes, remarkable wildlife density and the dramatic Great Migration, the reserve delivers some of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on the African continent.

Landscape and Ecosystem

The Maasai Mara covers approximately 1,510 square kilometers of diverse habitat, including open grasslands, rolling hills, riverine forests and seasonal streams.

The reserve forms the northern extension of Serengeti National Park, creating one of the most important wildlife ecosystems on Earth. Vast rolling savannahs stretch toward the horizon, broken by iconic acacia trees and crossed by rivers that sustain wildlife throughout the year.

Several important rivers move through the reserve, including the Mara River and the Talek River. These waterways serve as year round wildlife magnets and become dramatic crossing points during the Great Migration.

The wide-open plains make wildlife viewing exceptionally rewarding because animals can often be spotted from long distances, whether resting beneath trees, grazing on the savannah or moving between river systems.

Wildlife of the Maasai Mara

Predator strength

Why the Mara is so famous for action

The abundance of prey animals makes the Maasai Mara one of the best places in the world to observe predator activity. Lions are especially common and it is not unusual to witness dramatic hunting behavior unfold across the open plains.

The Great Migration

One of the most spectacular wildlife events on Earth takes place in the Maasai Mara each year. The Great Migration brings more than 1.5 million wildebeests, together with vast numbers of zebras and gazelles, moving between the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara in search of fresh grazing.

Between July and October, large herds cross the Mara River in dramatic scenes where crocodiles wait below and predators gather along the banks. These crossings produce some of the most iconic wildlife images ever captured in nature photography and documentary film.

Even outside migration season, the Maasai Mara remains one of Africa's richest wildlife habitats, which is why it continues to reward travelers year round.

Birdlife

The Maasai Mara is also a rewarding destination for birdwatchers, with more than 450 bird species recorded within the reserve.

Common birdlife

  • Secretary birds
  • Martial eagles
  • Lilac-breasted rollers
  • Ostriches
  • Vultures and hawks
  • Crowned cranes

Habitat diversity for birds

The mixture of grasslands, riverine forests and wetland edges creates excellent conditions for both resident and migratory species, adding another layer of depth to the safari experience.

Game Drive Experience

Game drives in the Maasai Mara feel immersive because the reserve's scale, wildlife density and open terrain combine so effectively. Early morning and late afternoon drives generally offer the best predator activity.

Visitors move through open plains, riverbanks and woodland areas where animals gather for water and shade. Because the reserve supports such a high concentration of wildlife, it is common to see multiple species during a single drive.

Watching a lion pride resting beneath an acacia tree or seeing a cheetah scan the plains for prey are classic Mara moments. The openness of the terrain also makes the reserve a dream destination for wildlife photography.

Cultural Encounters

The reserve is named after the Maasai people, who have lived in the region for centuries and remain deeply connected to the landscape.

Village visits and learning

Visitors often have the opportunity to visit nearby Maasai communities where they can learn more about traditional lifestyles, cattle herding practices, ceremonies and everyday cultural life.

Community and conservation

These cultural interactions offer insight into the relationship between local communities and wildlife conservation, giving the safari experience much deeper context than game viewing alone.

Best Time to Visit

The Maasai Mara can be visited throughout the year, with each season delivering a slightly different safari rhythm.

Migration season

The Great Migration season from July to October is the most dramatic time to visit, especially for travelers hoping to witness Mara River crossings.

Dry season game viewing

The wider dry season between June and October is excellent for wildlife viewing because animals gather near water and vegetation is less dense.

Green season value

The green season between November and May brings lush landscapes, fewer crowds and excellent birdwatching opportunities, which can be especially attractive for photographers and nature-focused travelers.

Year-round strength

The reserve remains rewarding outside peak migration dates, which is why the Maasai Mara continues to be one of Africa's top safari destinations in every season.
