Tsavo National Parks: Kenya's Vast Untamed Wilderness

Stretching across southeastern Kenya between Nairobi and Mombasa, the Tsavo National Park ecosystem forms one of the largest protected wildlife areas in Africa. Divided into Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park, the region offers immense wilderness, dramatic geology and a far more rugged safari atmosphere than Kenya's smaller flagship parks.

Tsavo East National Park: The Land of Red Elephants

Tsavo East National Park is the larger and flatter of the two parks, covering roughly 13,700 square kilometers of semi-arid savannah, open plains and sweeping horizons.

Landscape and ecosystem

The terrain is dominated by wide grasslands, scattered acacia trees, seasonal rivers and major geological landmarks. One of Tsavo East's defining features is the Yatta Plateau, a vast lava flow stretching for more than 300 kilometers and believed to be among the longest of its kind in the world.

The Galana River cuts through the park and serves as a critical water source for wildlife. Along its banks, game gathers in strong numbers, creating some of the best viewing opportunities in the eastern section of Tsavo.

Wildlife of Tsavo East

Tsavo East is famous for its large population of red elephants, whose dusty appearance comes from bathing in the park's iron-rich soil.

Tsavo West National Park: A Land of Volcanoes and Springs

Tsavo West National Park covers about 9,000 square kilometers and offers a very different visual character from Tsavo East, with more rugged, mountainous and geologically dramatic terrain.

Landscape and ecosystem

Tsavo West is shaped by volcanic hills, lava fields, acacia forest, craters and natural springs that create more varied habitat patterns. One of the park's best known geological landmarks is the Shetani Lava Flow, a broad black lava field named after local legends linked to its haunting volcanic appearance.

Mzima Springs

The highlight of Tsavo West is Mzima Springs, a series of crystal clear springs fed by underground water from the Chyulu Hills. These springs produce millions of liters of fresh water daily and support hippos, crocodiles, fish, aquatic birds and one of Kenya's most unusual underwater wildlife-viewing setups.

Why birding works well here

Rivers, wetlands, woodland, open plains and spring-fed habitat create a broad ecological mix that supports birdlife throughout the year, especially during greener periods.

Best Time to Visit

The Tsavo parks can be visited year round, but seasonal differences shape how wildlife distributes across the landscape and how the scenery feels.

Dry seasons

The dry periods between June and October and January to March provide especially good wildlife viewing because animals gather around water and vegetation is less dense.

Rainy periods

Rainier months transform the landscape into lush green scenery and increase the appeal for birdwatching and photography, particularly in areas supported by rivers and springs.

Why Tsavo feels different

Because of the parks' scale, even short safaris in Tsavo can feel more remote, raw and exploratory than in smaller, denser safari destinations.

Ideal traveler profile

Tsavo suits travelers who want larger wilderness, diverse geology, red elephants and a safari that feels more adventurous than polished.

Why Tsavo is one of Kenya's most unique safari destinations

From the red elephants of Tsavo East to the crystal clear springs and volcanic landscapes of Tsavo West, the broader Tsavo ecosystem offers an authentic wilderness experience unlike any other park in Kenya. Its enormous size, diverse scenery and remote safari atmosphere make it one of Africa's last great untamed wildlife regions.
