Located along Museum Hill in Nairobi, just a few minutes from the city centre, the museum is a key stop for anyone interested in understanding Kenya beyond wildlife safaris.

History of the Nairobi National Museum

Nairobi National Museum exterior

The Nairobi National Museum was officially established in 1910 by members of the East Africa and Uganda Natural History Society. Initially known as the Coryndon Museum, it was created to collect, preserve, and display specimens related to East Africas natural history and culture.

The museum was renamed the National Museum of Kenya in 1963, following Kenyas independence, reflecting its expanded role in preserving the nations heritage. Over the years, the institution has undergone major renovations, reopening in 2008 as a modern, world-class museum while maintaining its historical significance.
